Ocean Beach, San Diego
Okay, sure, we may be a little bit biased on this hidden paradise, however, we promise this west coast beach town will not disappoint. Not only did we live here for a short while, we also got married on the gorgeous cliffs overlooking the ocean. San Diego has SO much to offer, but if you are looking for a quick getaway to the beach with great surfing, local food, craft beers, and an amazing farmers market, this is the spot for you.
Ocean Beach is truly for those looking to get away from the norm. The locals, fondly referred to as “obecians” come from all walks of life, but are what I like to refer to as free spirits, beach-goers, and kind souls who like their town as unique as they are. What I love most about OB is that you are not going to find the same chain stores and restaurants that you will find in any other travel destination. OB takes pride in their individuality, their spunk, the unique food and craft beers, and their preservation of the ocean and native life.
During the day, walk to the beach and catch a wave surfing, sun bathe, or walk the main strip on Newport Avenue filled with local shops, food, and breweries. Don’t be surprised to see the locals walking barefoot with their surfboards or setting up to sell art and jewelry along the pier.
I would be remiss to not discuss the BEST tacos I have ever had at Mike’s Taco Club located directly across from the beach. Featuring fresh seafood, carne asada fries, and truly massive burritos, you will not be dissapointed. Another community staple is OB Noodle House and Sake Bar. Here you can find some of the best pho around, along with the original peanut butter whiskey, that did, indeed, lead to the release of Skrewball’s now famous version. For the sour beer lover (or just beer lover), venture over to California Wild Ales. I could truly write a novel about the wonderful food and breweries in this small town alone and I highly encourage you to venture and explore all of the options Ocean Beach has to offer!
Ocean Beach is home to the longest concrete pier in the world. Walk the pier or go fishing (all night if you want). A favorite past-time of ours was to head out to the pier after sunset with our fishing poles in hand, joining local fisherman at all hours of the night. You can catch a variety of fish including makerel, guitar fish, lobster, squid and more (check local fishing rules and regulations).
Sunsets. Sunset in Ocean Beach is not just a time of day, it’s a practice. It’s meditation. It’s a time-out from the day-to-day. As Spain does siestas, Ocean Beach does sunsets. People stop what they are doing, walk to the water or nearby and pause. Don’t miss the sunsets while in OB. Head to Sunset Cliffs for a truly incredible view, but don’t be THAT tourist and talk on your phone or interrupt the calming effects of mother nature.
